Playground Partners

    The Program

YMCA Playground Partners presents an outdoor curriculum, through collaboration with parents as trained playground coaches, to enrich the playground experience and promote cognitive development.

Each school is assigned a professional field manager who designs and implements developmentally age appropriate games and activities specific to the students and playground space.

Parent volunteers model positive social skills, facilitate conflict resolution and encourage inclusion of children in playground activities. In support of the school supervisory staff, YMCA Playground Partners “coaches” become actively involved, providing the constructs needed to initiate games and activities and support the educational qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play.

Founded in the spring of 2000, Playground Partners, Inc. was the inspiration of three parents of elementary aged children, Marshall and Ginny Merrifield and Dawn Lawson. They were moved to develop this program after realizing the tremendous potential to teach and model effective and positive social skills during the noontime recess period.

During the summer of 2000, Playground Partners, Inc. was established as a non-profit, 501 c(3) with a mission to change the culture of school playgrounds to be consistently fair, emotionally safe, and a place where positive social learning would take place.

After completing four successful years on the playground, Playground Partners, Inc. merged with the Magdalena Ecke YMCA to form YMCA Playground Partners in the fall of 2004. Today, YMCA Playground Partners is providing its curriculum to over 5000 elementary and middle school students with the support of parent and community volunteers. The YMCA Playground Partners balance of fun and values is working to transform playgrounds and recess periods into positive environments for students of all abilities and all personalities.

Mission Statement

Mission

TheYMCA Playground Partners mission is to provide a customized outdoor program that builds self-confidence, models effective communication and conflict resolution skills, and encourages positive behavior on the playground.

Vision
One of the goals of education is to provide a well-balanced curriculum that supports students intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally. Recognizing that elementary aged children spend one fifth of their school day on the playground, YMCA Playground Partners has created a path to secure the social and emotional well being of students on the playground.

As educators and parents know, when a child feels safe and confident their capacity to learn is enhanced. By implementing a fun outdoor curriculum which models teamwork, sportsmanship, conflict resolution and respect for others, the playground becomes a valuable resource, and in some cases, the first experience for a child learning those skills.

With the YMCA Playground Partners program, schools and parents are making a paradigm shift in the way playgrounds are regarded by extending the well-balanced curriculum throughout the school, from the classroom to the farthest ends of the playground.
