Additional Information

The Magdalena Ecke YMCA Riptides Swim Team is comprised of all levels of swimmers from novice to advanced serving the community of Encinitas, CA since the year 2000. The Riptides is a competitive team, but swimmers are welcome to participate at whatever level they feel comfortable. Participation in local swim meets is encouraged but not required. These meets are an excellent way for swimmers to realize the benefits of their hard work while enjoying the company of their teammates. Although swimming is essentially an individual sport, the Riptides have a strong sense of team unity and support.

Our state of the art facility features a competition “fast pool” with rim flow gutters for smoother water. This is a dedicated lap pool with a cooler temperature of 80 degrees, ideal for rigorous workouts. It measures 25 yards by 25 meters with 11 lanes, 8 starting blocks and digital pace clocks. The aluminum and glass roofs retract to reveal 2/3 of the facility and can be closed off in inclement weather. Locker rooms specifically for youth are located adjacent to the pool deck.

The Novice and Non-Competitive levels are a continuation of the swim lessons program. Focus is on proper technique and performance in the four strokes; freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Competition skills are introduced as well as the importance of self-improvement so that swimmers can move up to the intermediate and advanced levels.

The Intermediate and Advanced levels concentrate on building endurance by increasing the mileage of workouts and maintaining and improving proper technique, which is fundamental in competitive swimming. The Riptides program prepares its swimmers for high school, university, and professional level teams. Our coaches view the sport of swimming as a character building block -- a way for swimmers to achieve their goals and dreams, whether in the pool or out.
